Vietnam in 10–14 Days: Plan a Trip With Fewer Transfers
Two weeks in Vietnam are easy to fill with cities, bays and beaches. Keeping time for the holiday itself takes more thought. Here are three routes with two main bases, examples for 10 and 14 days, and a way to count transfers so a short flight does not consume an unplanned day.
For a first trip, choose one region and two bases
For 10 days, start with one region: Hanoi and Ninh Binh in the north, Da Nang and Hoi An in the centre, or Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc in the south. With 14 days, extend those stays or add one stop, such as Hue to the central route. If you want a contrast between regions, combine the north and centre with one domestic flight and different international arrival and departure airports. Leave the first day for arrival and each transfer day for travel and check-in. Alternate major outings with free days. If your international flight leaves from your arrival city, return there ahead of time, especially when domestic tickets are separate. These are suggested relaxed itineraries, rather than compulsory programmes or bookable tours.
Choose the north, centre or south around your priorities
Choose the north for urban culture and river landscapes; the centre for beach days and historic places; the south for a big city followed by an island stay. Start with your international ticket: if you arrive and depart in the same city, put the return journey into the calendar first. If your booked flight serves Nha Trang, a local base with several outings can fill the holiday without a compulsory flight to Hanoi.
Next, compare your dates with your main goal. Vietnam Tourism: Hoi An describes rain and storms from October to January, while Vietnam Tourism: Phu Quoc describes the dry period from October to March. A winter beach holiday and a summer trip with cultural outings therefore call for different priorities. Seasonal descriptions do not guarantee conditions on your dates; reduce reliance on boats and beaches when the forecast is poor.
For a family, adding nights to an existing base is often more useful than another transfer. Without a motorbike, choose accommodation close to everyday activities and arrange individual outings. A route on the map does not mean every stop is within walking distance.
North: Hanoi and Ninh Binh, without domestic flights
Choose this route for streets, food, museums and scenery when a beach is optional. Give Hanoi several days without early departures. In Ninh Binh, stay near the activities you want: the railway station and a rural hotel in Tam Coc may be different destinations.
Vietnam Tourism: Ninh Binh describes boat trips in Tam Coc and Trang An, as well as trains, buses, vans and cars from Hanoi. You still need a journey from the arrival point to your accommodation. Set aside one boat outing, another day for local temples and walks, and some unplanned time instead of fitting every nearby waterway into a single day.
| Days | Overnight base | How to use the time |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Hanoi · 3 nights | Arrival, rest and two relaxed city days. |
| 4–7 | Ninh Binh / Tam Coc · 4 nights | Travel day, then a boat outing, a local excursion and free time. |
| 8–9 | Hanoi · 2 nights | Return on day 8; day 9 for the city or a buffer. |
| 10 | Departure · no overnight stay | Airport journey timed for your international flight. |
Extend the northern route to 14 days
The simplest extension is four nights in Hanoi, five in Ninh Binh and four back in Hanoi: 13 in total. Extra days make it easier to move a boat outing around unsuitable weather and avoid a busy excursion on a travel day. Use the final city block for smaller outings that return to the same hotel.
If the bay matters to you, replace two of the last four Hanoi nights with a two-night cruise: one night in Hanoi before it, two aboard and one in Hanoi afterwards. Vietnam Tourism: Ha Long introduces the destination; check the chosen operator’s programme for the port, transfer, boarding time and cancellation terms. Adding Sapa or Ha Giang creates a different itinerary with more travel. Keep an alternative with Hanoi accommodation if the cruise is cancelled.
Centre: Da Nang and Hoi An, with a separate stay in Hue
For beaches and historic walks, begin in Da Nang and then spend time in Hoi An. A single Da Nang base with an outing to Hoi An reduces hotel changes; two bases let you enjoy old-town evenings without a return journey. Choose the benefit that matters to you instead of changing hotels for one short activity.
Vietnam Tourism: Hoi An gives a reference drive of about 50 minutes between Da Nang airport and Hoi An’s Ancient Town. That excludes waiting for a car and checking in. A final night in Da Nang is convenient for an early flight. For a later departure, you can stay in Hoi An and arrange a car for the required time; another hotel change is optional.
| Days | Overnight base | How to use the time |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Da Nang · 4 nights | Arrival, beach days and one outing, such as the Marble Mountains. |
| 5–8 | Hoi An · 4 nights | Transfer on day 5, the old town, beach and a free day. |
| 9 | Da Nang · 1 night | Return and a relaxed evening without a distant excursion. |
| 10 | Departure · no overnight stay | Airport transfer; your flight determines the departure time. |
For 14 days, place Hue between the two bases
Allocate the 13 nights as Da Nang four, Hue three, Hoi An five and Da Nang one. Spend days 1–4 in Da Nang, travel to Hue on day 5 and explore on days 6–7. Travel to Hoi An on day 8, then use days 9–12 for walks and rest. Return to Da Nang on day 13 and fly out on day 14. This gives Hue two full days without an excursion immediately after arrival.
Vietnam Tourism: Hue describes the Citadel and imperial tombs and gives a reference drive of about two hours from Da Nang airport. Trains and buses are alternatives, with local journeys at both ends added to the calculation. From Hue to Hoi An, account for travel through the Da Nang area: reaching Da Nang railway station does not mean reaching your Hoi An hotel.
If the sea is the main goal, use the extra four nights in Da Nang or Hoi An and leave out Hue. Avoid several attractions with fixed admission times on a transfer day. For a family, this change can offer more rest than another city.
South: Ho Chi Minh City before an island stay on Phu Quoc
Choose this plan for a few city days followed by a longer beach stay. In Ho Chi Minh City, group walks around one main neighbourhood and give the Mekong Delta its own day. Vietnam Tourism: Mekong Delta describes Ben Tre as an outing from the city with roughly two hours of driving each way. The return journey already uses a substantial part of the day; avoid placing it before an evening flight.
Vietnam Airlines gives a flight time of roughly one hour between Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc. Leaving the hotel, airport procedures, baggage and check-in add considerably more. Treat the island holiday as starting when you reach your accommodation rather than when the plane lands.
| Days | Overnight base | How to use the time |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Ho Chi Minh City · 3 nights | Arrival, the city and a Delta outing or another city day. |
| 4–8 | Phu Quoc · 5 nights | Fly on day 4; then beach, hotel and optional island outings. |
| 9 | Ho Chi Minh City · 1 night | Return before the next day’s international flight. |
| 10 | Departure · no overnight stay | Airport journey using the terminal shown on your ticket. |
For 14 days, extend the holiday while keeping two bases
Use four nights in Ho Chi Minh City, eight on Phu Quoc and one back in the city: 13 nights. The extra city day separates a Delta outing from the flight, while the island days allow for rest and changing weather. For a larger buffer before flying home, move one island night to the final city block.
If you want an overnight Delta stay, replace part of the city block rather than adding it on top. First confirm the journey back to the airport for your Phu Quoc flight. A combination of bus, port, ferry and hotel needs its own travel day and a fallback if sea services change; a flight is generally simpler for the example above.
For two regions, combine the north and centre in 14 days
One example uses 13 nights: Hanoi three, Ninh Binh three, Hanoi one and Da Nang or Hoi An six. Spend days 1–3 in Hanoi, travel to Ninh Binh on day 4 and explore locally on days 5–6. Return to Hanoi on day 7, fly to Da Nang and reach your hotel on day 8, then use days 9–13 for your central base. Depart internationally from Da Nang on day 14. This requires a suitable ticket home from Da Nang, rather than an assumption that a direct flight serves your home city.
If your international flight departs from Hanoi, reduce the central stay to five nights and return to Hanoi on day 13 for a final night: 3 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 1 = 13. That adds a second domestic flight. Compare its cost and travel time with an international ticket from another airport before paying for hotels.
Two regions are possible in 10 days, but a relaxed itinerary will need to give up either Ninh Binh or some beach time. Three regions, a bay, mountains and an island require a different pace. If fewer than two full days remain between major transfers, remove one distant stop first.
Count a transfer from door to door
Write down seven parts: packing and checkout, travel to the station or airport, waiting, the service itself, baggage collection, travel to the next hotel and check-in. A hypothetical one-hour flight plus two hours at the airport, two 45-minute city journeys and another 30 minutes after landing already totals five hours, before a delay or waiting for a room. This is a planning example, not an airline requirement; use your flight’s conditions for the airport arrival time.
For trains, use the Vietnam Railways enquiry with the date and exact stations, then add local transfers. An overnight train occupies a night in the calendar; count the berth separately rather than also treating it as a hotel night. Avoid an intensive excursion immediately after an early arrival unless early check-in, a shower and rest are arranged.
A bus or limousine van can work for a regional leg when boarding and drop-off addresses are clear. A private transfer reduces luggage changes and lets you agree on a stop. A hotel car, public transport and a train serve different needs: compare the full journey to the door rather than only the seller’s travel-time field.
Before paying, check baggage, responsibility for the next leg and what happens if you arrive late. Online check-in under Vietnam Airlines conditions does not remove baggage drop and the airport process. Save tickets, Vietnamese addresses and operator contacts; if an app is unavailable, use the carrier’s counter or ask your hotel to arrange the next leg.

Budget for nights and transfers for the same travelling party
Compare routes for the same dates, passengers and baggage. Include the international ticket, domestic services or transfers, nine or thirteen nights, meals outside prepaid packages, local transport and chosen activities. For an overnight train or cruise, move that night out of the hotel line into the relevant travel line and note any included meals.
A cheap domestic ticket may lose its advantage after baggage, two airport journeys and an extra night near a terminal. One base with outings can cost less than several inexpensive hotels connected by transfers. Compare cancellation terms too: with poor weather forecast, a flexible hotel can be more useful than a small discount.
To illustrate the arithmetic, use a hypothetical room at 900,000 VND per night: nine nights total 8,100,000 VND and thirteen total 11,700,000 VND per room. This invented rate is a calculation example, not a hotel offer or market benchmark. Do not multiply a single room price by the number of guests; an extra bed, child rate or second room has separate terms.
Record the final budget from selected offers with the enquiry date, travel dates, party size, ticket or room category, baggage, taxes and cancellation terms. Without those details, a promise of two weeks for one fixed sum does little to help you choose a route.
Check the itinerary before booking
- The calendar uses actual arrival and departure days; a late arrival is not counted as a full sightseeing day.
- The night total matches the trip, with cruise and train nights not duplicated as hotel stays.
- Every major transfer has space in the calendar; complicated outings are not placed before or immediately after it.
- Exact stations, ports, terminals and hotel addresses are known, beyond the city names.
- There is time in the final city before the international flight. The preceding night is a relaxed-planning recommendation, not a connection guarantee for every delay.
- Poor-weather alternatives exist, and boat, cruise, hotel and transport cancellation or rescheduling terms are clear.
