Tet in Vietnam: Prepare Your Trip and Everyday Plans

Before Tet, streets fill with flowers while a familiar café may post a notice saying it will close for several days. Travel and everyday life are easier to arrange when you settle three things ahead: where to stay, how to get there and what to use when a service is temporarily unavailable.

Book your journeys and prepare alternatives for everyday tasks

If arriving during Tet, secure accommodation and both airport journeys first. Where possible, spend the opening holiday days at one base rather than linking several transfers. Public employees have an approved break on 4–10 February 2027, but businesses do not share one opening schedule. A week ahead, complete essential payments and routine appointments, buy supplies and prepare a payment method that works for you. Obtain date-specific answers from your hotel, shop and clinic at the actual address. Save contacts and confirmations offline, with alternatives for meals and transport. Choose holiday activities from the relevant year’s programme: an old announcement does not confirm new fireworks or a festival.

The Tet calendar and business hours answer different questions

Government News reports approval of seven days off for public employees on 4–10 February 2027, supported by the official document No. 10065/VPCP-KGVX. This is an approved decision, beyond earlier seven- or ten-day proposals. Its lunar dates identify 10 February as the fifth day of the new year, placing the first on 6 February.

The public holiday does not establish the closing date of a restaurant, bank branch or private clinic. One business may close only on the first day; another may stop before Tet and return several days later. Look for Tết Nguyên đán, the correct year and address. Tết Dương lịch means the January New Year. Mùng 1 is the first day of the lunar year, rather than 1 February.

For a short trip requiring ordinary services, compare travelling before Tet or after your selected businesses resume their schedules. To experience Tet itself, arrive with a settled base and leave time for a walk without a booking. There is no promise that every service resumes together on 11 February.

A month ahead: secure the trip or complete time-sensitive tasks

A month is a useful starting point, rather than a ticket-availability guarantee or proven cheapest booking window. List journeys and tasks with firm deadlines, then address those you cannot replace locally. The advance booking guide covers the basic booking sequence.

If you are visiting for a holiday

Confirm overnight stays, then major flights or intercity trains and transfers. Ask your accommodation about late arrival, breakfast and restaurant opening on your actual holiday dates. A kitchen provides another meal option, but still requires shopping. Ask the driver or hotel to confirm who will meet you, where and how you will make contact.

Vietnam Tourism notes increased transport and accommodation demand as people travel home to their families. Compare your actual dates including luggage, taxes, cancellation terms and the final total. There is no universal doubling of every price. If a ticket works only with a flawless short connection to a bus, choose a more forgiving route or an overnight stop.

If you live in Vietnam

Arrange rent and other essential payments, routine medical appointments and air-conditioning or appliance maintenance. Plan any expiring-document task from the deadline in your document, rather than expected holiday office availability. Ask your accommodation manager for the person handling leaks, locks and electricity while the regular team is away.

If clients work in another time zone, share your availability and move tasks requiring a local contractor or delivery. Ordering and receiving an item are separate stages: an essential item is ready once delivered, rather than once payment is taken. Agree sufficient supplies of prescribed medication with your clinician or pharmacy.

A week ahead: buy modest supplies and get specific answers

Buy water, simple food and household essentials for the opening days, matching your kitchen, refrigerator and household. Avoid perishables you cannot store. Identify two meal options and save their addresses; the alternative should not require a long journey if the first is closed.

Ask a specific question: “Does this branch open on 6 February 2027, at what hours, and is this service available?” For a restaurant, add guest numbers and ask about the ordinary menu or a holiday set. For a driver, give the route, flight and luggage. Save the reply and contact. Regular map hours help locate a place, but do not establish its holiday shift.

Transport: confirmation matters beyond having a ride app

For Nha Trang, specify Cam Ranh Airport and your exact address: a city hotel and an airport-area resort involve different routes. For Da Nang, distinguish city accommodation from continuing to Hoi An. Ask for a transfer total including holiday charges, parking, waiting and cancellation conditions. Agree contact arrangements for a delayed flight or an unresponsive driver.

Check Grab, Xanh SM/Green SM, Maxim and inDrive at your address and time. Having an app does not establish an available vehicle. A confirmed transfer or hotel-arranged ride for a night departure reduces dependence on last-minute searching, while still requiring confirmation. Save a Latin-script address and contact so you can use an ordinary taxi without internet.

The Grab notice for Tet 2026 listed a VND 15,000 GrabCar surcharge per trip during its specified period. This illustrates a separate holiday charge, rather than promising a 2027 price. Read the new order’s total and terms before confirming; do not treat a universal surcharge percentage as fact.

According to the Vietnam Airlines check-in page, online check-in runs from 24 hours to one hour before departure for eligible flights. Restrictions include departures from Sheremetyevo; online check-in does not remove baggage drop or document checks. Save your booking reference and ticket offline, recheck flight time and allow time for travel and queues. Follow your carrier’s instructions rather than relying only on boarding time.

Money, shops and clinics: distinguish services and branches

Tet does not stop every banking operation. The Vietcombank notice for Tet 2026 distinguishes settlement cut-offs from continued 24/7 internal and instant electronic transfers, with an exception for treasury payments. For rent, receipt timing matters: check transfer type, execution time and status, then confirm receipt with your landlord. That document does not set Tet 2027 branch hours.

Prepare small banknotes for expenses you actually pay in cash, and test an alternative payment method ahead. An illustrative VND 200,000 daily cash allowance × three days plus VND 300,000 for a backup ride gives VND 900,000. This is a personal planning method, rather than a quoted fare or universal household requirement. Holiday hours will not make an unusable card work; the Vietnam payment guide explains payment options.

The store schedule for 2026 closed LOTTE MART Nha Trang and Da Nang on Tet’s first day; on the second, their supermarkets opened at 10:00 and 12:00 respectively. Da Nang’s cinema had separate hours. This demonstrates differences between branches and services, rather than giving a 2027 schedule. In the new notice, find your address and supermarket row instead of relying on overall complex hours.

The Vinmec notice for Tet 2026 distinguishes outpatient care from emergency services: Vinmec Nha Trang and Da Nang had different outpatient closure dates, while emergency and inpatient departments operated around the clock. For 2027, obtain the relevant department’s schedule. Ask about the date, clinician and booking for routine care; save emergency-care details and your insurer’s assistance contact separately. Do not delay urgent care until the holiday ends. The useful contacts guide covers other useful contacts.

Holiday outings: use your city’s programme

Flower streets and markets, city decorations, waterfront walks and a festive meal at an open venue suit Tet. The Nha Trang city portal reports Nha Trang’s Hội Hoa Xuân in 2026: a genuine local celebration format, but its dates do not establish the next edition. Save a meeting landmark and the way home, particularly for an evening with children.

Danang Fantasticity published a separate Da Nang flower-display programme for Tet 2026. For a new trip, look for a 2027 announcement with addresses and times; old routes and decoration photographs do not establish access. Include fireworks or a Dragon Bridge show only when a current announcement confirms them. Without a programme, plan a short Han River walk and dinner near your accommodation.

At temples and pagodas, remember that others may be making a religious visit. Follow local rules, leave offerings undisturbed and ask before photographing a person or ritual. At a flower market, establish the price of your chosen plant and delivery; a large display is awkward for an ordinary taxi or hotel room.

Visiting a home: wait for an invitation and agreed time

Vietnam Tourism explains the significance of the year’s first guest and red lì xì envelopes. Do not arrive uninvited, especially on the first day: hosts may select who crosses the threshold first. Agree a time, guest numbers and whether children can attend. Chúc Mừng Năm Mới means “Happy New Year.”

Ask your host about gifts and envelopes; there is no universal compulsory amount for a tourist. A modest agreed gift is easier than an unexpected large purchase. Mention dietary restrictions ahead and politely decline an alcoholic toast if preferred. Do not move altar objects for photographs or turn a family visit into a tour without your hosts’ agreement.

Before the opening holiday days

  1. Accommodation confirmed, with late arrival and meals arranged.
  2. Both journeys planned, with a ticket or vehicle confirmation and backup contact.
  3. Essential payments made and receipt confirmed.
  4. Food, household essentials and agreed supplies of prescribed medication ready.
  5. Relevant branch hours, care contacts and accommodation support saved offline.
  6. Activities use the correct year’s programme and any family visit is agreed.
