Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay: Compare Cruises and Total Costs

Both Ha Long and Lan Ha have limestone scenery. What changes your trip is the itinerary, time on board, cabin and journey to the ship. Here is how to choose a day trip or overnight cruise and compare prices after the extras.

Choose a day trip or overnight stay first

Start with a day cruise if the bay is one stop in a busy Vietnam itinerary. Stay overnight for an evening on deck and a morning among the cliffs. Choose Ha Long by the caves and islands listed in the actual programme. Consider Lan Ha for an itinerary involving Cat Ba, a village visit or kayaking, checking each activity separately. The bay name alone promises neither solitude nor fewer ships around you. “Two days, one night” does not mean 48 hours on board. Before paying, get the exact port, check-in time, ship name and total for your party. Confirm any essential cabin feature or guiding language in writing.

Ha Long or Lan Ha: compare the stops on a map

Ha Long: select a specific cave and island itinerary

For example, Ambassador Day Cruise lists Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave and Titov Island on its day programme. That describes one product, not every Ha Long cruise. If those stops matter, find them in the itinerary you will buy. The Ha Long Bay administration publishes official route options.

Compare shore visits with the time between them. A longer list does not always give you more time exploring: sailing, boarding small boats and waiting for the group take time too. Fewer excursions may suit you if watching the cliffs from the deck is the priority. For a cave visit, ask how long you can spend walking there.

Lan Ha: check how Cat Ba fits into the programme

The Heritage Line one-night Ginger itinerary starts through Tuan Chau Marina, with a speedboat connection to Ginger. It includes Viet Hai village on Cat Ba and kayaking the next morning. A Lan Ha cruise therefore need not start on Cat Ba itself. A “Ha Long–Lan Ha” label does not tell you where you board the main ship or spend the night.

Heritage Line offers one night on Ginger and two on Ylang: different ships and programmes. Read both itineraries rather than imagining an extra identical day. Check whether you have time simply to sit on deck; an excursion schedule need not fill every available hour.

The port and transfer are part of your holiday

Tuan Chau Marina and Halong International Cruise Port are different places. Ambassador’s day itinerary lists disembarkation at the latter at 16:45; that time does not apply to other ships. Request a map pin for check-in, the pier name and a meeting contact. “Ha Long port” is too vague for an independent taxi journey.

From Hanoi, confirm the pickup address and window, return point, stops, luggage allowance and vehicle type. An included transfer may mean the tender from the pier to the ship, rather than a bus from your hotel. Outside the pickup zone, allow for reaching the meeting point. If travelling independently, arrive before check-in, not merely before expected sailing. The intercity travel guide explains ticket options.

Starting on Cat Ba or in Hai Phong? Request a quote from that exact location. Going through Hanoi unnecessarily may erase the saving on a cheaper package. Plan the journey after the cruise separately from your flight, allowing for the tender, landing, finding a car and delays. An overnight stay ashore gives you a margin before an important departure; this is planning advice, not an operator requirement.

What is actually included in the price?

Ambassador Day Cruise includes programmed meals and sightseeing entry fees on its day cruise, but lists travel to and from Ha Long, kayaking and bamboo-boat rowing as extras. An activity appearing in the timetable is not automatically free. An “all-inclusive” headline cannot replace separate inclusion and exclusion lists.

Heritage Line includes port fees but excludes bay admission and shuttle or private transfers. A different operator, Heritage Cruises Bình Chuẩn, includes itinerary entry fees and kayaking but excludes Hanoi–port transport. Heritage Line and Heritage Cruises Bình Chuẩn are separate companies. Check the seller’s package: an agent may bundle extras with the ship’s basic terms.

The Russian-language Calypso listing at Vietnam Discovery excludes transport and drinks and treats child accommodation and meals separately. “Child travels free” therefore need not mean zero expenses. Confirm guiding language for your actual sailing; a translated sales page does not establish the language used on board.

A budget for two: the lower headline price may lose

Imagine comparing two one-night trips for two adults. Every amount below is invented to demonstrate the calculation, not a researched fare or a quote from the operators mentioned here. Extras are totals for both travellers and both road journeys, not charges per passenger.

Package B saves USD 30 despite the higher base fare. The comparison only works with comparable cabins, ships, stops and cancellation terms. If you want kayaking in both, add it to both columns. If you do not want an optional service, do not count it as compulsory spending.

As a premium-product reference, Heritage Line advertises one night on Ginger from USD 423 per person for October–December 2026. Two adults would start at USD 846 before excluded services. This is one product’s starting fare, not a bay-wide average or a confirmed price for your cabin. Request a total for your own dates and retain the quote with its currency.

Cabins, children and boarding access

Select a cabin on the named ship

Keep the ship name, cabin category and deck plan. Request photographs of that category and its differences: a window or balcony, shower or bathtub, double or twin beds. Advertised floor area may include the balcony. For a third traveller, ask how much space remains after installing the extra bed.

Light sleepers should ask about the engine room, restaurant and stairs nearby. If a balcony is the reason for booking, confirm it together with the ship-substitution terms. A general gallery may show the most expensive suite. On a day trip, a seat in the restaurant is not a private cabin; check whether a cabin is available and what it costs.

Families and travellers with limited mobility need specifics

Provide each child’s age and ask about beds, meals, bus seats and a correctly sized life jacket. Check kayaking restrictions and whether an adult can remain on board with a child during a shore visit. “Family cabin” does not explain where everyone sleeps.

If walking is difficult, check pier steps, tender boarding, ship stairs and the route from cabin to restaurant separately. A lift does not solve boarding from a small boat. Describe the assistance needed before payment and get an answer for each stage. If a cave or climb is unsuitable, ask about remaining aboard, available assistance and an alternative activity.

Weather and cancellation: ask about three scenarios

A rain forecast does not by itself mean cancellation. Bhaya explains that Ha Long and Lan Ha sailing permissions fall under different local authorities. Switching bays is not guaranteed. Ask who communicates the decision, through which contact and before which transfer departs. The Vietnam seasons guide gives general seasonal context.

Request terms for three cases: sailing is prohibited before you travel to the port; you reach the port but cannot sail; the cruise starts and is shortened. For each, clarify refunds, used services, rescheduling and accommodation ashore. Also ask what happens if the ship operates but you decide not to travel. Passenger cancellation and an authority-imposed stop are different grounds.

Bhaya’s booking conditions list a 100% charge for standard passenger cancellation less than eight days before a joined cruise when booking one cabin for 1–4 nights; a promotion may have different terms. Once part of the package has been used, a full refund is unavailable and the final amount after deductions is confirmed in writing. These are Bhaya’s terms, not a rule for all ships. Keep the terms for your fare and obtain a written refund calculation.

For a short holiday, have an alternative day ashore in a town where you can stay: a walk, museum or free time. Avoid buying a second non-refundable cruise before the first operator’s decision. Cloudy scenery can still make a rewarding trip, but no itinerary guarantees sunshine, swimming and every stop in all weather.

Get these details in writing before paying

  1. Date, ship name, bay and detailed itinerary; ship and stop substitution terms.
  2. Port name, check-in map pin, required arrival time and both transfers.
  3. Cabin category, beds, child ages and boarding assistance requirements.
  4. Total for the whole party, currency, compulsory fees and selected extras.
  5. Guiding language, meals, activities and separately charged services.
  6. Cancellation terms, weather scenarios, contact and refund or rescheduling procedure.

The tour-selection guide covers general questions for sellers and checks on local services. For a cruise, add the ship, cabin, port and total for everyone: those four details make two attractive listings comparable.
