Nha Trang, Da Nang, Da Lat or Ho Chi Minh City: Choose Your Home Base
A holiday city is a choice about experiences. A home base also has to work on an ordinary Tuesday: somewhere to work, buy groceries, educate a child and get things done. Nha Trang, Da Nang, Da Lat and Ho Chi Minh City offer different routines. Use this guide to shortlist two and test them before a long lease.
Set your essential conditions, then shortlist two cities
For everyday life near the sea, compare Nha Trang and Da Nang first. In Nha Trang, test a routine around the waterfront and neighbouring streets; in Da Nang, compare the beach side with the city side of the Han River. If heat disrupts your day, add Da Lat and test cool evenings, damp rooms and hilly journeys. If face-to-face business and a large city matter more, start with Ho Chi Minh City and choose a neighbourhood around work or school. Families first need a suitable curriculum and a place for their child; anyone receiving regular care needs access to the right specialist. Shortlist two remaining cities and spend at least an ordinary working week in each. Compare the full cost of the same lifestyle, with the view from your window considered after essential conditions.
| Main priority | Initial shortlist | What could change the choice |
|---|---|---|
| The sea and nearby daily errands | Nha Trang and Da Nang. | The neighbourhood, season, noise and grocery route. |
| Cooler weather instead of daily heat | Da Lat and one coastal city. | Damp rooms, hills, cold evenings and access to services. |
| In-person work and business meetings | Ho Chi Minh City and a city with your required contacts. | Daily travel time, workspace and lawful working arrangements. |
| A schoolchild with a specific curriculum | Cities with a confirmed schooling option. | Teaching language, grade, availability and the full annual bill. |
| Regular specialist care | Cities with the right clinic and specialist. | Appointments, language, insurance coverage and the journey from home. |
Four cities, four everyday routines
Every city still requires a neighbourhood check. These starting points are suggestions for a trial stay rather than a quality-of-life ranking. Noise, daylight and access to the street can vary considerably between two apartments in the same block.
Nha Trang: a routine around the sea and nearby streets
Vietnam Tourism’s Nha Trang guide describes a coastal destination with urban beaches and access by rail, bus and air. For a first stay, consider central streets behind Trần Phú and a separate option near Hòn Chồng. Map a small daily circuit: home, groceries, food and a walk. If they are close together, you can test living without your own motorbike and use a car for occasional journeys.
The trade-off is a holiday environment near home: hotels, evening venues, traffic and building work call for a check of the actual window. Do not assume Russian-speaking service from the city name; find your required tradesperson, doctor or teacher and ask about language. Keep Nha Trang on the list if a repeatable seaside routine matters more than a large number of in-person professional meetings.
Da Nang: choose your side of the river around your needs
Vietnam Tourism’s Da Nang guide highlights beaches, the city airport and rail and bus connections. Compare Mỹ An / An Thượng near the beach with central Hải Châu neighbourhoods west of the Han River. These names help locate areas on a map; the exact school, office and apartment address matters more than an older administrative designation.
If every working day involves crossing the river, a seaside apartment adds a journey in both directions. If you work at home and want the beach morning and evening, it may fit better. Include shopping, an activity or a meeting on the opposite side in your trial week. Da Nang belongs in the comparison when you want to combine the coast with city life, with the services you need mapped to your particular area.
Da Lat: cooler weather with housing and terrain to test
Vietnam Tourism’s Da Lat guide highlights the mountain city’s cooler climate. For your first week, look for accommodation with a straightforward route to the centre and Xuân Hương Lake, then compare a more distant street. Pine views and a quiet villa outside town can mean separate trips for shopping, classes or medical visits.
Walk your regular route: a short map distance can include hills and steps. At home, check hot water, clothes drying, damp smells, sunlight and evening comfort. Test Da Lat if cooler weather matters more than the sea and you are prepared to assess each essential service individually. A family requiring a specific overseas school curriculum needs an actual schooling option first; a pleasant climate alone cannot settle the decision.
Ho Chi Minh City: work or school address first, apartment second
Vietnam Tourism’s Ho Chi Minh City guide describes Ho Chi Minh City as the country’s economic heart with heavy traffic. If you need in-person meetings, office work and urban leisure, start with the addresses of those activities. You could compare central neighbourhoods, Thảo Điền or Phú Mỹ Hưng, but choose between them by your route rather than a reputation as an “expat area”.
The city has the metro described by the city press centre, Line 1 Bến Thành–Suối Tiên. It helps when both required locations are reachable from its stations; its existence does not solve every journey. Measure the whole trip: leaving home, walking to the station, waiting and the final leg. If school is in the south and work elsewhere, test the morning journey first. For everyday sea swimming, choose another city from this group.
Compare the weather for your intended months
Vietnam Tourism’s Nha Trang guide places the rainy period in September–December. Vietnam Tourism’s Da Nang guide describes prolonged rain and gloomy weather in November–February. Vietnam Tourism’s Da Lat guide advises allowing for rain from April to November and cooler months from November to January. Vietnam Tourism’s climate overview describes Ho Chi Minh City as hot year-round, with a wet period roughly from May to November. These are seasonal guides rather than predictions for individual days.
For living, the question extends beyond swimming: how long will you spend in air conditioning, where will you dry clothes, can you walk to groceries, and will several overcast days bother you? Da Lat may reduce the heat issue without eliminating dampness. A sea view does not guarantee a dry apartment. During a viewing, check ventilation, signs of leaks, window seals and whether appliances actually work.
If your trial week falls in a favourable season, assess the apartment and routes for wet months separately. Ask the owner about past leaks and flooding near the entrance, look at street level and check vehicle access. Assess air and noise at the specific building too: a mountain setting or proximity to the sea does not establish suitable conditions in every room.
Fit work, travel and social life into your week
Decide where and when you will work. An available café does not replace somewhere quiet for calls, and advertised fast Wi-Fi does not test your connection to a work service. Permission to stay and your working arrangements are separate from choosing a city; begin paperwork preparation with the moving preparation guide.
Remote work: a home setup and a backup location
In Da Nang, Seaview Coworking lists 135,000 VND for a day and 2,000,000 VND for a month. In Ho Chi Minh City, Regus shows day coworking from 290,000 VND, varying by location and terms. These are workspace examples rather than city averages. Compare day entry with day entry, and a monthly package with its actual duration, hours and restrictions.
Before paying monthly, spend a complete working day there: make your own video call, test the chair, sockets, air conditioning and access hours. In Nha Trang and Da Lat, start by testing work in your chosen home and one nearby backup location. For shifts or night work, get confirmation of access during your required hours; a “coworking” label does not mean round-the-clock opening. Test mobile backup inside the room as well.
Without a motorbike: count recurring journeys
In all four cities you can plan around walking sections and journeys with a driver; in Ho Chi Minh City, add a useful metro segment. The tourism pages for Vietnam Tourism’s Nha Trang guide, Vietnam Tourism’s Da Nang guide, Vietnam Tourism’s Da Lat guide and Vietnam Tourism’s Ho Chi Minh City guide describe taxis or urban transport options. For a lease, assess the actual trips to the shop, school and workspace entrances rather than general transport availability.
An extra 20 minutes each way over 20 working days adds up to 13 hours 20 minutes a month. This is an illustrative calculation, not a journey time for a particular city. Compare car prices at your travel hours, pickup access outside home and a late return. With a child, check a suitable vehicle and child restraint when arranging the booking.
Social life: find an activity you will return to
Include two interest-based meetings in your trial week: sport, language exchange, a professional or family activity. Look for a recent announcement, address, language, participation terms and the next date. A chat group with thousands of members does not show whether suitable people actually meet in your neighbourhood.
Some people need a couple of regular friends and an enjoyable activity; others want several industry meetings a week. For the latter, start by checking Ho Chi Minh City and the actual calendar; for the former, any city with activities that fit your day can work. Treat Russian or English as a specific requirement for a meeting, school or service rather than a promise about the whole city.
Schooling and healthcare can decide the city before rent
These verified examples are starting points. They do not establish a quality recommendation, an available place or insurance coverage. Obtain an answer to your actual need, then choose a neighbourhood with an acceptable recurring journey.
Families: a school name does not establish teaching language
In Nha Trang, SVIS describes its Premium Vietnamese Education Programme: the Vietnamese Ministry of Education curriculum with additional Cambridge English. That cannot automatically be treated as all subjects taught in English. In Da Nang, APU separately lists international and bilingual programmes at 299 Trần Đại Nghĩa. For either option, ask about your actual class’s teaching language, new-student support, entry assessment and admission at your intended time.
In Ho Chi Minh City, ISHCMC publishes an IB programme from Early Years to Grade 12 and separate charges. Its Grade 1 example for academic year 2026–2027 lists annual tuition of 702,400,000 VND, admission of 50,000,000 VND and an annual development fee of 67,500,000 VND when choosing that scheme. Together they total 819,900,000 VND before possible additional costs and applicable discounts. This illustrates why a family should compare the school bill before small rent differences.
For Da Lat, begin with a curriculum suitable for your child and confirmation that it is available locally. If an essential programme cannot be found or the school cannot accept your child, remove the city from your current shortlist. For preschool, also check everyday language, naps, meals, supervision and settling-in arrangements. Before a long lease, obtain the school’s response on grade, availability, the full bill and refund terms; a promotional promise alone is no reason to pay.
Regular care: look for the specialist you need
Nha Trang has Vinmec Nha Trang and Da Nang has Vinmec Da Nang. In Da Lat, Hoan My Da Lat describes paediatrics, diagnostics and other medical services. In Ho Chi Minh City, FV Hospital lists specialist departments and clinics. A hospital in town provides a starting point; it does not guarantee your required specialist, an appointment in a particular language or direct billing with your insurer.
For regular care, ask the clinic about the specialty, age group, language and appointment process, and give your insurer the institution and service names. Count the journey from the proposed home and plan for a situation where a visit is available only in another city. Service and payment terms may change: the chosen clinic and your insurer provide the final answer before planned care. Do not postpone necessary follow-up simply for a more attractive apartment.
Price the same life over 30 days
Send owners or agents the same request: specific 30 nights, occupants, a separate bedroom or studio, kitchen, washing machine, work desk and all fees. For a later long lease, request a separate quote for the same duration. Compare at least three suitable options in each shortlisted city; do not put a hotel’s nightly rate and a monthly rate under a yearly lease in the same column.
Da Nang Landlord, for example, lists A475 in An Thượng with one bedroom, 45 m² and 10,000,000 VND a month, twice-weekly cleaning and Wi-Fi. Go Home Dalat lists a studio at 6,000,000 VND a month but with a minimum contract of 6–12 months. These are different properties and durations; they do not prove Da Lat is 4 million cheaper for a first month. A listing status does not establish availability on your dates, and utilities, deposit and exit terms belong in a written quote.
| Comparison row | What to record | What can distort the result |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Full price for identical dates, duration and household. | Comparing a studio with a bedroom or a short stay with a yearly lease. |
| Utilities and services | Power, water, internet, cleaning, laundry and building fees. | “Included” without limits or a breakdown. |
| Workspace and travel | Required visits and recurring journeys. | Treating a café as a free office or omitting trips. |
| Schooling and healthcare | Confirmed programme, required charges and coverage. | Counting tuition alone or relying on a hospital name. |
| Food and leisure | The same split of home cooking, restaurants and activities. | Comparing different habits. |
| Move-in cash | Refundable deposit, advance rent and moving costs separately. | Treating a deposit as a monthly expense or forgetting it. |
Compare your recurring total alongside cash needed immediately. Keep a refundable deposit separate: it reduces your available reserve without becoming monthly rent. Weigh any price difference against travel time, quiet and essential conditions. After choosing the city, move to the Nha Trang apartment guide or Da Nang housing guide; the next step below covers budgeting in detail.
A trial stay: seven days of your ordinary routine
A useful initial test is 7–10 nights in each of two cities, with at least five ordinary working days. This is a suggested duration rather than a rental rule. Choose temporary accommodation in the neighbourhood where you would actually look for an apartment. A distant resort tests a holiday and tells you less about future daily life.
During the first two days, walk the grocery route and visit a nearby essential service. Then complete a working day, repeat the journey at school or office hours, and assess home late in the evening. Use the remaining days to explore the second potential apartment area, attend a regular activity and collect written quotes. Record actual time, costs and problems; one enjoyable walk should not replace those notes.
If both cities meet essential conditions, give each 0–2 points for work, travel, indoor climate, errands and social life: 0 means it gets in the way, 1 means manageable with cost or effort, and 2 means convenient. A maximum of 10 is your personal result rather than a city ranking. An unavailable essential school, unacceptable medical access or an unresolved permission-to-stay issue still stops the choice even with high scores elsewhere.
Settle these points before a long lease
- The city suits the whole season of your intended stay.
- An essential school or regular medical service is confirmed where needed.
- A working day and recurring journeys have been tested in practice.
- Shopping, everyday services and social activities fit your routine.
- Housing prices use the same duration, with deposit and advance rent separated.
- Permission to stay and working arrangements are checked before long commitments.
